Simple, stylish ideas for decorating your home this Christmas
A soft colour palette
Rose gold, bronze and the use of geometric shapes has very much been on trend in people’s homes this year and is being carried into Christmas, offering a warm and relaxed interior.
A dramatic look
To add some drama, contrast metallics with dark colours such as a classic navy. This light-absorbing colour shows off bronze and rose gold in all their glory. Just remember, less is more when using such striking contrasts.
Let there be light
It’s all about the lights at Christmas, so add candles and lanterns in various shapes, sizes and colours helping to create a perfect space to unwind after the busy build up to Christmas.
With over 40 years of combined expertise, Ruari McCulloch and his team at event florist Pinstripe and Peonies know just what is needed to create beautiful natural Christmas decorations. We met up with them to find out more:
Ruari says, “The phrase ‘Christmas is coming’ fills our florist’s hearts with dread. Hands shredded by holly, pine needles in places no pine needle should go and the glitter everywhere, the glitter! That said – Even in our flowery jaded hearts we secretly LOVE Christmas (and a touch of glitter)”
This year, Christmas flowers for the home have fallen into two distinct colour palates:
Pinstripes and Peonies
Pinstripes and Peonies
Pinstripes and Peonies Red, burgundy and Claret, with touches of purple and soft traditional foliage. A very Christmassy Christmas feel and suitable for the smartest London home or Country house.
Ruari told me, “We are based in the flower market and are lucky enough to see every single flower, petal and bauble that comes through its doors. We are admittedly a team of self-confessed flower snobs, but every year a few items make us reconsider what is and isn’t tasteful and we start getting excited about putting together new designs. This year, so far we have seen stunning navy blue glittered Skimmia, platinum dipped foliage, rose gold and glittered pinecones and the very first of the ‘Woodstock’ Hyacinths in a vivid and utterly beautiful purple. You may notice we mentioned glitter twice!
We have a long table at home so rather than one or two arrangements, this year we will be having a mass of smaller vases ranging from clear glass bud vases to antique gold vases dotted along the table. We will fill each one with a mass of snowy white scented flowers, Hyacinths (bulbs and cut), Ranunculi, Hellebores, frosted Roses and silver Senecio coupled with Eucalyptus pods. Rather than the usual candelabra, we are going for tall tapered navy blue candlesticks in different height holders and a mass of flickering tea-lights in clear holders.”
